Big Rod’s AAF Opening Weekend Picks
AAF kicks off tomorrow. The first week picks are a lot like picking that early college bowl game between North Carolina A&T and Alcorn State, but I’ve done my homework so let’s take a shot.
Saturday, February 9
San Diego Fleet at San Antonio Commanders 7:00 CST |
I like the Fleet, I think they are a fairly balanced team and I think Martz will get the most out of his QB Mike Bercovici who put up big numbers at Arizona State. I think the Commanders will look to grind things out a lot more than Martz’s Fleet. The Commanders have four tight ends on the roster and three of them are over 250 pounds.
I am going to pick the Fleet 31-20 over the Commanders.
My Pick: Fleet 31, Commanders 20
Atlanta Legends at Orlando Apollos 7:00 CST |
This should be an entertaining game. Steve Spurrier has not named a starting QB. He might have a formation with all three of them on the field. He might onside kick the opening kickoff. No he won’t, the AAF does not have kickoffs.
Legends coach Kevin Coyle is looking at Aaron Murray and Matt Simms as his QBs. The Legends will look to Legend Mike Vick to be the offensive coordinator. I feel like this is a shaky first week game. You know what they say, if you have two QBs you have zero QBs
But, I’m going with the Apollos over the Legends.
My Pick: Apollos 23, Legends 9.
Sunday February 10
Memphis Express at Birmingham Iron 3:00 CST |
I feel like this will be the best game on the opening schedule and possibly two of the better teams in the league.
The Express will look to get Zach Mettenberger and Christian Hackenberg some time and hope one of them rises to the occasion and takes over the starting job. I think the Legends have a very talented roster but I’m not sold on these two underachieving guys at QB. I think Singletary will have his team ready though and they will play solid defense.
The Iron will start Luis Perez at QB. I would look for some sets for Blake Sims though, maybe some sort of “Wildcat” look. The Iron are loaded with former Alabama and Auburn players. I look for them to be a tough out.
Iron over Express 23-21 on a last second field goal by Nick Novak.
My Pick: Iron 23, Express 21
Salt Lake Stallions at Arizona Hotshots 7:00 CST |
The Hotshots and Rick Neuheisel may be one of the teams you really need to see. Trevor Knight might be one of the most explosive athletes on any roster. I look for the Hotshots to be an up tempo team that will try to outscore their opponents.
I think Dennis Erickson’s Stallions might be the polar opposite of the Hotshots. I think they will play ground and pound and rely on their defense. This is going to be a game of polar opposites.
I think the Stallions frustrate Knight most of the night but the Hotshots do just enough to get a tough 26-22 win.
My Pick: Hotshots 26, Stallions 22
