AAF Player Profile: Herbert “Cheeto” Gonzales – San Antonio Commanders, DT
Scrolling through our Big Rod, Bear, and The Basement Boys Twitter feed one day, and I stumble across a guy named “Cheeto” listed under the”Who To Follow” section on the right of my screen.
I notice the San Antonio Commanders follow him, whom we follow. It’s apparent that he is a player for the Commanders so we shoot him a follow. Not even a few minutes later, Cheeto followed us back and that’s when it felt right to reach out to him and learn more.
This player profile is unique and different from the ones we’ve done previously. We were able to reach out to Cheeto with some questions. Being the kind guy he is, Cheeto responded with no problem! Below is an interview I had with Cheeto.
BOP: How did you find out about the AAF? Did someone contact you or were there open tryouts?
CHEETO: I had read an article CBS had posted about a new professional football league which was the AAF. I attended an open tryout in Atlanta, Georgia where I put on a clinic.
BOP: Where did the nickname “Cheeto” come from?
CHEETO: The nickname came from my college football teammates at Texas State. My hair is dreaded and used to be bright red. I was a little bit of a hot head and with the color of my hair they called me Flaming Hot Cheetos, then this was shortened to Cheeto.
BOP: What was your best college football memory?
CHEETO: My best College football memory has to be my first start against the University of Houston where I had an amazing game including multiple tackles for loss.
BOP: Have you met as a team yet in San Antonio? If not when does camp start?
CHEETO: We have not met as a team yet. We will meet in a mini camp sometime early December.
BOP: What was your favorite beverage in college?
CHEETO: Vitamin Water and Pedialyte
BOP: Your predictions on this first season in the AAF? Team and individual.
CHEETO: AS A TEAM…….. VEGAS BABY!!! As an individual I want to be the best defensive tackle in the league.
BOP: Are Cheetos considered chips?
CHEETO: Well my slogan is “CHEETO LIKE THE CHIPS” so, OF COURSE THEY ARE CHIPS!!!
After talking with Cheeto, he is officially my favorite player in the AAF. In high school, Cheeto was a three-time All-District defensive tackle at Southwest High School. Cheeto also claimed Second-Team honors as a sophomore and First Team as a junior and senior. He was also recognized as an All-District First Team tight end following his junior campaign. Cheeto had a big senior year with 72 tackles, including 21 for losses, with five sacks and 38 quarterback hurries. He compiled 58 stops as a junior and 47 as a sophomore, and was a member of back-to-back district and regional title teams (sophomore and junior season) with a composite 19-5 record, and was named Defensive MVP in the San Antonio All-Star Game. Not only was Cheeto a standout football star, but he also competed in track and field where he shined as a regional qualifier in the shot put and District Champion in the discus. Cheeto graduated in the top five percent of his class (18th of 675) to garner Academic All-State honors. He attended Texas State to play college football.
Big Rod, Bear, and The Basement Boys look forward to cheering for Cheeto in his upcoming season with the San Antonio Commanders.
