AAF Team Preview: San Antonio Commanders – Commanders Thinking B1G

The average high temperature in Minnesota in February is 16 degrees, in Indiana, 32 degrees, in San Antonio, 69 degrees. The Alliance for American Football regional draft provided the San Antonio Commanders a football rich area in Texas with the numerous colleges (21 players on their roster played college ball in Texas) but the Commanders also reached outside their region and grabbed nine former Big Ten players that were not assigned to a region in the draft because there is no AAF team in the Midwest.

The Big 10 vs. Texas battle begins at the QB position with Austin Appleby who started seven games for Purdue in 2014 where he graduated and then finished off his career at Florida. He quarterbacked Hoover High School in North Canton, OH. Challenging him will be Trevor Knight from Texas A&M, Luis Perez from Texas A&M – Commerce and Dalton Sturm from UTSA.

Trevor Knight transferred to Texas A&M after losing out to Baker Mayfield when Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma. Perez was on the Harlon HIll watch list in 2016 for the top player in DII and Sturm started 33 games in his career with the Roadrunners.

Mike Riley will coach the Commanders after a well traveled career that included Grey Cup championships in the CFL and coaching the Chargers in the NFL.

Two others I am keeping my eye on, Oscar White, a DB from D3 Dubuque and eight time D2 All-American Max Mickey, a running back, from the University of Sioux Falls. I’m not sure how you can be an eight time All-American in four years, but I guess he made more than one All-American team both his junior and senior season.

The Commanders will take the BIG talent from Texas and the B1G talent as they try to compete for the 1st AAF championship. And to those Midwest college players, enjoy the weather this spring in San Antonio. Learn more about the San Antonio Commanders here! ➡️ https://aaf.com/san-antonio-commanders/
